To admire an example of a town fortification, you do not need to travel to southern France’s Carcassonne. You will find one of the best-preserved fortifications in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, in Polička. The town’s fortification, as we know it today, was built in the 14th century during the reign of Charles IV. The main wall is 2,5 metres wide; its core is made of cast marl and both outer walls are made of hard stone. The hight of the curtain wall reaches up to 10 metres. The exceptional state of preservation is unique in the Czech Republic; the only comparison could be made with the late Gothic fortification of Kouřim.

The guided tour begins in the History of Polička exhibition, where you will learn how the fortification was built, whether it was effective and why it has survived the centuries. Afterward, the group will walk to one of the accessible sections of the town walls. There, you can take a leisurely walk along the battlements, inspect the bastions and, those who are interested, can climb the ladder to the arrow slits from where they can survey the “movement of enemy’s troops”. The medieval adventure in the heart of Polička awaits you!
